Steps to Manually Configure Microsoft Products to Activate via the UCLA KMS These directions are intended for non-system administrators activating single machines.

Make sure your computer has the correct time/date/time zone. Your computer must be up to date with the latest MS security patches.
UCLA participates in the UC wide Microsoft Consolidated Campus Agreement (MCCA) which allows departments to purchase a large number of Microsoft products a significant discount. UCLA System Administrators can configure their machines to locate UCLA's campus-wide KMS service using either of the following two methods. The machines to be activated are required to use a UCLA IP address.

How to configure the necessary SRV entries in Microsoft Windows DNS server for automatic KMS discovery
Open up the DNS Control Panel in the "Administrative Tools".
Select Start-Administrative Tools-DNS from the Windows Desktop
Browse to the Forward Lookup Zone for your domain, and then click on the "_tcp" node. In the right pane, right click the mouse and choose "Other New Records…" from the menu.
In the DNS Control Panel, select the _tcp node for the Forward Lookup Zone for your domain.
A useful tool for performing and managing your activations is the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT). VAMT is able to store the activation data to reapply to machines again later, to avoid consuming activations against your key when reimaging.

Microsoft has rolled-out a new type of product activation called Volume Activation (VA) for products such as Office , Windows and Windows Server.
PLEASE NOTE: These mechanisms are not yet required to use other Microsoft products, but Microsoft has stated that it is their plan to require this for other products in the future.
The Microsoft Campus Consolidated Agreement (MCCA) allows departments to license Microsoft products on an annual basis, meaning continued use of the products acquired through MCCA requires annual payments. MCCA Faculty and Staff Licenses and some MCCA Online products are licensed based upon the numbers of faculty and staff (Knowledge Workers) in a department rather than the number of computers the department possess.
